BSA Club Air Sporter .177 Rifle

The BSA Club Air Sporter was the earliest of the iconic BSA Air Sporter underlever air rifles.

It was distinct from the early MK1 s in that they were all .177 calibre.

The name "Club" appears to have been used for all, of the first .177 rifles, and the .22 ones designated the Air Sporter MK1.

However, it is understood that the piston chamber is slightly shorter on the Club model which only has 2.4” of piston travel

compared with 2.8” for the .22, MK 1 models.

Here we have a superb example of this Club Air Sporter Rifle, and its serial number suggests that it was made in the last half of 1950.

Its main features are:

Underlever Action: The underlever cocking mechanism is concealed within the forearm.

Tap Loading: Utilizing the tap system for single pellet loading.

This rifle has the automatic port opening system, in that it opens as the cocking leaver is pulled down

so that the operator can insert the pellet and close it by hand once the cocking process has finished.

One-Piece Barrel and Receiver (Early Production): The initial "Club" models, like the very early .22 Mk I, This Rifle has a one-piece barrel and receiver.

Leather Piston Washer: This Rifle is fitted with the traditional leather piston washer for air compression.

Adjustable Open Sights: Equipped with adjustable rear sights for windage and elevation, and a front sight.

This rifle also benefits from the factory fitted BSA peep sight, which Foulds backwards for storage.

This is a very rare optional extra that was occasionally fitted to these rifles.

Wooden Stock: featuring a simple beech stock, with the winged BSA logo impressed on the left side.

The stock looks to have been oiled at some point.

The action has a blued finish that is showing signs of wear, and the trigger housing has the traditional painted finish which is also showing signs of use.

However as can be seen from the pictures, the general appearance of this rifle is very good for its age.

This is one of only 14500 which were made and as such is very rare today.

This rifle is stamped on the trigger block with "Patent Nos 607.045".

This patent, applied for in 1946 and granted in 1947, relates to the cone-shaped piston head and head chamber design used in these early rifles.
